Sand between our toes - Zanzibar

NOMAD

ADVENTURES

After the week climbing Kili we felt we deserved some relaxation and went to Zanzibar. We could have asked for nothing more. Sunshine, sea and sand. We spent our first night in Stone Town and got to sample some of the seafood as well as the infamous Zanzibar Pizza......yummy!! The following day our lift to the north of the Island near Nungwi was only at 1pm so we spent the morning walking around the town and visiting the old slave site which was built into a church with the guidance and help of David Livingston after slavery was abolished on the island.

We spent the following 4 nights on a part of the island called Kwenda were we could just lie on the beach relaxing soaking up some sun, or walk a few metres and get a full body massage or if you felt up to it arrange some snorkeling or diving trips. We decided to do a full day diving along a coral reef of the Mnembe Island. So after breakfast we headed out on a Dhow and unfortunately for us the heavens opened but by the time we reached the reef for snorkeling it had stopped and the water was warm. The amount of fish and colours of fish we saw was amazing as we swam around for an hour or so before getting back on the boat to head off to the beach where the crew had cooked us a delicious meal of fish and salads finished off with lovely fresh fruit.

The following day we arranged to go to the east of the island where we would take a boat and head out to sea to hopefully meet up with some dolphins and swim with them. As the dolphins are in their natural habitat there is of course no guarantee, but after being on the boat for approx. 45 min's we saw the dolphin's and were told to jump into the water and swim with them. It was truly amazing to see the school of about 13 dolphin's swimming on the ocean floor and then coming up to the surface for a few minutes before heading back down again. Unfortunately in all our excitement and constant jumping into the water we did not manage to get any photo's....... The last day we just spent relaxing on the beach before we had to head back to Dar es Salaam and start making our way to Malawi.
